JAMES MARTINEZ SALEM
(he/him) is a Puerto Rican/Syrian Jewish queer bookwriter, lyricist, and composer, born and raised in Brooklyn. James' musical Charlotte Lucas is 27 and Not Dead, co-written with Jessie Field, is a 2022 Semi-Finalist for the O'Neill national musical theatre conference, a semi-finalist for the SDSU new musicals initiative, and the winner of Piper Theatre Co.'s musicals now festival. Charlotte will have a workshop production in NYC in Summer 2022. In 2021, James was a finalist, with Josh Ben-Ami, for the Marvin Hamlisch International Music Award for emerging musical theatre artists. James is especially interested in telling nuanced stories about characters that are not often given the spotlight (especially stories centering queer joy) and in creating theatre that is both inclusive and broadly accessible.
James holds an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU Tisch,
a JD from NYU Law, and a BA in Theatre and Political Science from CUNY Hunter.
James is also a licensed and practicing attorney, a board game enthusiast, and a dog lover.
