JAMES SALEM is a bookwriter, lyricist, and composer. His first musical, “Bending All the Rules,” written with Joseph Salem, was produced at the June Havoc Theatre as part of the Midtown International Theatre Festival in 2013. In 2015, James’ second musical with Joseph Salem (“Among the Hidden,” based on the novel by Margaret Peterson Haddix) was awarded a grant to hold a staged reading at CUNY Hunter College. In 2020, James received an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU Tisch. While at Tisch, James wrote book and lyrics for two new musicals: “#Masc4Masc: A Totally Masculine Musical,” with Josh Ben-Ami; and “Camp Cut-the-Cord,” with Jackson Payne Brothers. James is also developing a song cycle, for which he is writing music and lyrics, titled “About Last Night.” In 2016, James received a J.D. from NYU Law, where he was a Jacobson Scholar, “Law Revue” performer and vocal arranger, and a member of OUTlaw and the Latinx Law Students Association. James is currently a licensed and practicing attorney. James was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.
